Have a space that ‘sparks joy’
You might have heard of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up or the phrase “spark joy.” These are both part of the KonMari method, which was developed a few years ago by Marie Kondo from Japan. Her book has sold over 4 million copies in 30 languages.
This method is not like other organizing methods that call for a “one in, one out” rule or “if you haven’t worn it in a year, throw it out.” Setting logic aside, the KonMari method helps you hone what you intuitively love and what ‘sparks joy’ for you. Though our possessions could just be viewed as inanimate objects that don’t affect our attitude, Marie Kondo sees things differently. Your items can contribute to your success and allow you to make difficult decisions in other areas of your life that need attention.
Instead of working room by room or area by area, the KonMari method has you tackle item categories and touch each item to give it the attention it deserves.
Instead of organizing (or tidying as Marie calls it) in small batches for the rest of your life, the KonMari method is more like a tidying marathon that lasts for a few months, and then you can continue with the system for the rest of your life and make small adjustments.
Think of the benefits of organizing this way: you give special attention to all the items in your house, choose what really resonates with you, display those items in a way that continues to spark joy and invigorates your space, and allows you to perpetuate a tidy space for a long time, with no relapse.
It all starts with pinpointing what you want from your space. How do you want to feel when you come home? What do you want to be able to do in your space? How do you want to feel in the morning? Where do you want to go with your life, and how can your home space assist you with it? The more specific you are, the more your vision will become a reality using the KonMari method.
